Sanctimony

It was hot out and a cold beer seemed like the best idea in the world. I was just a few blocks away from Burnie’s Bar, so I went there. Max Angst was sitting at the bar with a sixteen-ounce stein of Indian Pale Ale in front of him.
Art, Join me. I need a sounding board.
“Oh! Oh!” I thought. “What now?” But I answered I was eager to hear what he had on his mind.
“I almost got caught in a trap of my own making,” he said.
“How’s that?
“I couldn’t help thinking how hypocritical many of these evangelical Christians are. They claim to be followers of the Prince of Peace, but they strongly support the War President as his people kill, maim and torture people across the world. They get all bent out of shape about the Ten Commandments, but doesn’t one of those commandments say, “Thou Shall Not Kill"? Yet, they strongly support and administration that will spend $500 Billion on the tools war; tools designed to kill people.. The weep and moan about abortion killing babies but support the war in Iraq where children are slaughtered every day. There’s only one time in the New Testament when Jesus seems to be angry, when he drove the moneychangers out of the temple. Yet, the evangelicals are wedded hip to thigh with the most rapacious gang of money grubbers in history. It’s all so hypocritical.”
“But what do you mean about getting caught in your own trap?” I asked.
“ I let these guys get me angry and Jesus taught us to love even those who do us harm. I don’t consider myself a Christian, but I think Jesus had a good handle on the kind of morality this world needs. So, I’m going to wish the evangelicals well and hope they consider my analysis, because, by their own faith, some day their going to have to answer for what they do. I wouldn’t want them ending up in the wrong place.”
“Max, I’m going to have to think about that myself,” I answered.
