I've Been Thinking
The rain was unbelievable, just running from my car, parked two doors north of Burnies Bar, got me drenched. Then lightning flashed as I entered the door and a blast of thunder shook the ground. Max Angst sat at the bar and the look on his face matched the weather.
“It was a damn fool thing to come out in this weather, Art,” he said to me.
“ I see you came out in it too,” I answered.
“ Yeah, I’m a damn fool, too. It’s hard not top be in this damn fool world. You keep on hoping it will get better, but it gets worse. You think I’d have learned by now.”
“What happened, Max.” I asked.
“A million things. I look at this world and it makes me sick. Do you know that in every decade of the twentieth century there has been a major incident of genocide? People kill people at a blink of the eye. On top of that there are the wars. Somewhere people are killing each other all the time.”
“Some people are happy.”
“Which only reflects how myopic they are.”
“So what do we do about it?”
“That’s what’s even worse. People keep trying to do things to straighten things out, but things get more screwed up. Jesus tried to make things right, but Christianity turned out to be the brutal civilization that invented the rifle, the tank and the atomic bomb. Marx tried to straighten things out and millions suffered and died in Russian, China and Cambodia. Even Hitler though he was straightening things out. And, so Does George Bush. But, it just keeps on getting worse.
At that point the door opened and I was surprised to see that the Sun was shining outside, the storm had passed. Molly Higgins walked in. Molly was the daughter of Blackie the bartender at Burnie’s and she was running for Congress on the Peace Party ticket.
“Art, Max how are you today?” she asked, a broad smile on her face.
From the look on his face I thought Max was about to barf.
“Hi, Dad,” Molly called out to Blackie. “I’ve some good news, the doctor says I’m ten weeks pregnant.”
“So, you’ll drop out of the race for Congress?” Blackie asked.
“God, no dad. This gives me even more reason to fight for peace in the world. I want my child to have a good life.”
Max couldn’t contain himself. “Fight for peace, fight for justice, fight for economic security its all a lot of bull. It always end up in people killing each
other.”
“No Max, that’s not true. It has always ended up in men killing each other and men killing women and children, too. It’s time we try something new. Its time women run the show. That’s why I’m running for office,” Molly said.
The scowl never left Max’s face as he picked up his beer and poured the whole glass down his gullet.
“Well I guess you couldn’t do worse than what’s been done in the past. You’re right, it has been the men who caused all the bloody trouble. We got to try something, why not let the women govern.”
